Enrique Iglesias
Spain
Enrique Iglesias is one of the most successful bilingual artists of all time, bridging Spanish-language pop with English-language chart success. Born in Madrid in 1975, he is the son of Julio Iglesias, one of Spain’s most successful singers, and Isabel Preysler, a well-known journalist. After his parents separated, Enrique was largely raised in Miami, giving him the dual Spanish-American identity that would come to define his career.
Iglesias launched his music career in 1995 with his self-titled debut album, sung entirely in Spanish. It was a runaway success across the Latin world, selling millions of copies and earning him a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. Two further Spanish-language albums followed in the 1990s, establishing him as one of the most prominent young voices in Latin pop.
His global breakthrough came in 1999 with “Bailamos”, a song first featured on the Wild Wild West soundtrack. The single hit No. 1 in the United States and No. 4 in the UK, propelling him into the English-language market. That same year, he released Enrique, his first English-language album. His next major foray in the English-speaking world came with his album, Escape (2001), which reached No. 1 in the UK Albums Chart. Its lead single “Hero” topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks and became one of the defining ballads of the early 2000s.
After the huge success of the early 2000s, Iglesias experienced another surge of English-language success in the late 2000s. Hits such as “Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song)” and the duet “Takin’ Back My Love” with Ciara continued to prove his ability to cross into English-speaking markets while maintaining his Spanish-language output.
His career took another upwards trajectory in the 2010s decade when he returned to more Spanish-language output. His bilingual album Euphoria (2010) spawned global hits in both English and Spanish, while songs like “Bailando” (2014), “El Perdón” (2015, with Nicky Jam), “Duele el Corazón” (2016), and “Súbeme la Radio” (2017) became massive international hits, with arguably "Bailando" the defining song of his career.
Over his career, Enrique Iglesias has sold more than 180 million records worldwide, scored multiple No. 1s in both English and Spanish charts, and won numerous Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards. He has also been credited with paving the way for the reggaetón and Latin pop explosion of the 2010s, showing that bilingual and Spanish-language music could thrive globally long before it became mainstream.
