La Oreja de Van Gogh
Spain
La Oreja de Van Gogh are one of Spain’s most successful pop-rock bands, known for their melodic sound, heartfelt lyrics, and ability to adapt across decades. Formed in San Sebastián in the mid-1990s, the group first broke through with their debut album Dile al Sol (1998), fronted by Amaia Montero. Songs like “Cuéntame al oído” helped establish their bittersweet pop style and gave them an immediate audience at home.
Their second album, El viaje de Copperpot (2000), was the real turning point. With hits like “La Playa,” “Puedes contar conmigo,” and “Cuídate,” they became one of the defining Spanish bands of the early 2000s. Their combination of soaring choruses, light rock arrangements, and emotional lyrics connected across generations, and the record sold in huge numbers.
In 2007, Amaia Montero left to pursue a solo career. The rest of the line-up continued together, bringing in Leire Martínez as their new singer. With her, they released A las cinco en el Astoria (2008) and later Cometas por el cielo (2011), proving that the band could evolve while staying true to their emotional storytelling.
Over the years, their catalogue has dealt with themes of love, nostalgia, and everyday life, producing some of Spain’s most recognisable ballads. “Rosas” remains a timeless love song, while “Jueves” offered a poignant tribute to the victims of the 2004 Madrid train bombings.
With more than 8 million records sold worldwide, a Latin Grammy to their name, and a career stretching over 25 years, La Oreja de Van Gogh remain one of Spain’s most enduring pop groups.
